Ashiatsu is for people who have chronic pain in their muscles as well as people who have range-of-motion problems. It's been shown to help people with back pain, migraines, fibromyalgia, carpal tunnel and rheumatoid arthritis. It can also reduce something in the body called substance P (which causes pain), improve sleep, increase circulation, boost immunity, raise levels of serotonin (a feel-good neurotransmitter) and decrease levels of cortisol (a stress hormone).
Ashiatsu massage helps patients who prefer to receive deep tissue and sports massage. This is great for the relief of overused muscles and muscle soreness resulting from sports injuries or everyday stress. Ashiatsu massage improves circulation due to more surface compression, and there is no residual soreness after the treatment.
If you're interested in trying out Ashiatsu massage, definitely check with your primary care physician first. This type of bodywork is not for everyone, including those who have had any augmentation done recently (such as breast implants), those who have had a recent injury or surgery, those with heart problems or heart devices (such as a pacemaker), those with nerve-related pain and pregnant women. The problem is that during a pregnancy, the change in the center of gravity makes women more prone to falls.
